Early in 2015 I was able to quit my job, work for myself, and travel while I did it.
I was able to take days/weeks off at a time, and still continue to earn money. This was a huge change from my old job where I only got paid for the hours I worked, had a set roster I had to stick to, and had trouble getting people to cover my shifts if I did want to go on a holiday.
So how did I do it?
Simple. With Kindle Publishing.
Kindle is the E-reader made by Amazon that has been growing rapidly in popularity around the world, particularly in the United States. People using these E-readers can download a range of e-books from the Amazon store, at insanely low prices.
Being from Australia, I’d heard about the Kindle, and obviously knew about e-books, but Kindle wasn’t a huge thing at the time here.
In fact, I didn’t even know anybody who owned a Kindle device!
So how did I stumble into Kindle Publishing?
I’ve always been interested in business and entrepreneurship, and straight out of High School I started an eBay business to earn some extra money on the side. I grew this business over the next couple of years and had a good level of success with eBay.
Unfortunately, when you’re selling on eBay, you have very little control. eBay and PayPal can shut you down for any reason (or lack thereof) that they like, with absolutely no warning.
This happened to me a couple of times, and really hindered my progress.
Even though I was making a decent income, I didn’t feel comfortable leaving my job when eBay was so unreliable.
And so, I began to look for something else.
I also decided that I’d like to work with digital products instead. That way I wouldn’t have to spend all of that time ordering stock, checking the products, taking photographs, packaging orders, and making trips to the post office.
I looked into a few different styles of internet marketing, and felt pretty overwhelmed. At the time, I was working in the Fitness industry, which is something I’m passionate about. But I was trading time for money, and I knew that this wasn’t scalable or what I really wanted.
And then, I read about Kindle Publishing. Basically, I found out that anybody could publish a book on Amazon for sale, and start making royalties from it instantly!
Not only that, but there were people out there that completely outsourced the writing of their books!
So these people were selling books that they didn’t even write! Not only that, they didn’t have to manage inventory, worry about refunds, or communicate with the customer – Amazon handled all of that.
Safe to say, this got my attention.
I started reading anything I could find on self-publishing, and eventually signed up for a few online courses teaching how to create books and publish on Amazon Kindle.
In late 2013 I got started, and published my first book.
During this time, I was working at my job around 30 hours per week, studying Commerce full-time at University, and was still selling a few things on eBay!
So I was pretty busy, but I was really determined to make this work.
Unfortunately, my first book was a flop.
In fact, my first 10 or so didn’t take off.
But, I stuck at it and eventually I had a book start selling well! Finally, I was earning some passive income.
It was the best feeling. Once I put up the book for sale, the work was done. I was making sales while I slept, while I studied, while I was at my job! Finally, I’d created some passive income.
But it wasn’t much, only around $10 per week at this stage.
I started publishing more and more books. Lot’s of these were absolute duds, but I slowly started to learn what makes a book sell.
As I learned more, my books started making more and more money.
Soon enough nearly every book I put out was a success.
I started making more and more money, and was able to shut down my eBay store to focus on Kindle Publishing.
The newest books I published were almost all successful. I even had one book make me over $1000 a month passive income! This was crazy because the book itself had only cost be $120 in total to create. At this point I realised that I’d created a real business.
Fast forward a little over a year after I first began publishing, and I was able to comfortably quit my job.
My income grew and grew as my portfolio of books increased. Books that I didn’t even write.
It’s quite a different business model, and one that can be kind of hard to explain to friends and family when they ask ‘So what do you do for work?’ but it has totally changed my life.
Several months ago, I decided to stop publishing any more books. Now, I rarely focus on my books, and in fact spend less than 4 hours per week managing them!
I’m able to travel, work on other projects, and pretty much do what makes me happy.
Yep, Tim Ferris didn’t lie. The 4-hour work week is real!

Over the past couple of years, I have learned a lot about business, Kindle Publishing, myself, and life in general.
I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning. I spent a lot of money making these mistakes too!
Now, I make the majority of my Publishing income (Over $200 passive income per day) from less than 20 books!
I learned what things make a book sell, and what determines that a product will be a winner in the long-term.
I’ve seen people use this knowledge to create 6 figure Publishing businesses within 1 year!
Personally, I decided to step back from Kindle publishing for a while. I’d done it for so long, it was time to reap the rewards, and focus on some new things.
I began teaching people about Kindle Publishing, and started regularly getting messages from people asking me a ton of questions.
I realised how fun and rewarding it was to help others with this business, and so I created a course teaching people everything that I’ve learned to sell books on Amazon and make passive income.
This course is called Freedom Self Publishing and can be found at www.freedomselfpublishing.com Check it out if you’re interested.
Nowadays, I get to work on new projects while I travel. I love business, entrepreneurship, health and fitness, travel, and self-development. And so today, those things are what I focus on and are what this website is all about.
This website is a way for me to talk about the things I enjoy, and hopefully help and inspire others along the way.
Kindle Publishing is just one of the many different ways to make passive income online. It’s worked for me and it’s only going to get better. E-books currently account for about 50% of the book market.
Of the E-book market, amazon currently holds around an 80% market share and are continuously growing! They even sell their Kindle devices at a loss, as to encourage more people to buy their E-books!
Amazon is the biggest store in the world, is constantly innovating, and are definitely someone who I enjoy being partnered with.
So currently, Kindle Publishing is where the bulk of my income comes from, and is something I’d recommended to absolutely anybody wanting to make some passive income. In my opinion, it’s the easiest and fastest way to make money online.
With that being said, it’s now time for me to start adding more and more income streams, and continue my education in business and internet marketing. You can follow the different projects I engage in on this blog: www.drivenliving.com
Kindle Publishing may not be for everyone, but it’s definitely changed my life.
