What Is A Digital Nomad?

What’s a Digital Nomad?

Do you know?

Are you one?

Digital Nomad is a term I stumbled across when I was looking into travelling while I worked online.

Digital Nomads are basically people that can work from anywhere. They are location independent. Some of these people are entrepreneurs, some are freelancers, some just work for companies that allow them to work from anywhere!

Today’s technology makes working from anywhere in the world possible. Once I quit my job I worked from home for a while, and slowly got less and less productive. Melbourne was heading into Winter (which I can’t stand), I didn’t really know any other entrepreneurs, and was getting less and less done.

I started to look into working while I travel, and where are the best places to travel solo. I found out that a lot of people out there were already doing this, and were calling themselves ‘Digital Nomads’.

Digital Nomadism is something that Tim Ferris talks about in the 4 Hour Work Week. Personally I think the term ‘Digital Nomad’ sounds a little ‘wanky’. I prefer saying ‘Location Independent’ but Digital Nomad is the popular term, so we’ll stick with that!

I read so many blog posts about this whole Digital Nomad thing, and watched just about every YouTube video on the topic.
I found out that Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand was the number 1 hotspot for Digital Nomads.

I’d already been to Phuket before, I love Thai food, wanted to escape the horrible Melbourne Winter, and I wanted to meet some like-minded people. Chiang Mai seemed like a no-brainer!

But, I was nervous.

I’d never travelled alone before, and was worried about what others would think.
I watched every YouTube video about Chiang Mai. I learned what things I should go see, where to buy food, how to find apartments, how much everything cost, and more.

Eventually, I decided to bite the bullet and booked a plane ticket!

I had my first Digital Nomad experience in mid 2015, and it was life changing. I met a heap of like-minded people, got to experience authentic Thai culture, ate some of the most amazing and cheap food, and got a lot more work done than I was getting done at home!

One great thing about the Digital Nomad lifestyle is how affordable it can actually be.
The reason Chiang Mai is so popular is because of how cheap everything is! My average meal cost me around $1.50AUD, and apartments are available for between $120 – $1000 per month.
Personally I paid around $500AUD for the month for a big apartment with bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, 2 balconies, access to a gym and a pool!
Being a Digital Nomad allows you to live like a King, while spending less than you would in a Western country.

Because of the low cost of living, there were a ton of people in Chiang Mai working on their businesses that I could network with.
This made for an awesome working environment that helped me to be extremely productive in my work!

A cool coworking space in Chiang Mai called MANA. Cost less than $1 per hour to use!

So, if you’re already working online then go ahead and look into the Digital Nomad community and lifestyle.
You don’t have to go to Chiang Mai, this was just the first place I visited. For 2016 I have plans to travel for 6+ months whilst I work.

Thanks to the power of the internet it’s now possible to work from wherever you like. If you could choose to live and work from anywhere, where would it be?

What if working from this place could be cheaper than living at your current home?

Maybe you’d like to travel to a whole heap of different places while you work. It’s totally up to you!

But, don’t get me wrong, it’s not all fun and games. You do still actually have to put in the work. You are still doing a job or running a business, and that requires a certain level of effort. However, you get to schedule your day the way you like, meet and network with new people, get more work done than usual, experience a new culture and country whenever you feel like it, and build your business while living like a King!

If that sounds good to you, then the Digital Nomad lifestyle could be worth looking in to!
After experiencing it for myself, I know that I absolutely love it!

If that’s not for you then don’t stress, there’s heaps of other ways that people make money online!

If I could change any one thing, I wouldn’t have waited as long to travel while I worked. It’s something you really have to experience for yourself, that will totally change your life.

So, don’t put it off. If you’re interested, then act today!
